Bike Week is a much-loved tradition at Channel, giving students the opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun while developing essential cycling skills.
All students (Kinder to Year 6) are asked to bring a bike and helmet to school. Throughout the week, students will learn how to ride safely, understand road rules, recognise risks, and look after their bikes through basic maintenance. We also focus on being responsible, encouraging one another, and enjoying physical activity outdoors.
Each day, classes participate in safety lessons led by Chris McGregor from the Bicycle Education Unit. Once teachers are confident in students’ safety awareness and skills, groups may head out on local rides around Margate, or even further to Snug, depending on ability.
The week concludes with the “Big Ride”, a celebration of each student’s growth in confidence, ability, perseverance, and stamina.
With increased traffic on our roads, ensuring safety requires plenty of support. Parent helpers play an essential role during Bike Week—assisting with road crossings, walking alongside beginner riders, or joining groups on longer rides. If you can help, please contact the office or your child’s classroom teacher. A current WWVP card is required.
