FAITH, HOPE and LOVE – The story of Esther

As we think about our theme for this term, Faith, Hope and Love I am reminded of the story of Esther in the Bible. This young exiled Jewish woman was chosen to become Queen of Persia. An advisor, Haman, persuaded King Xerxes to pass a law that allowed for all Jews to be killed on a certain day. The King did not know that Esther was a Jew.

Esther and her uncle Mordecai were extremely distressed but Mordecai encouraged Esther with the following words: “ For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14. So Esther went to the King to ask him to retract Haman’s law and tell him that she too was a Jew. Esther was very nervous as it was forbidden at the time for anyone, including the Queen, to approach the King, she could end up being executed herself. This courageous act by Esther saved the Jews.

In this story, Esther demonstrated Faith in her God, Hope in His plans and Love for God’s people. God used Esther to save His people. He is also constantly working in our lives, using us to build His kingdom. My prayer is that we have eyes to see and ears to hear Him. May our stories reflect Faith, Hope and Love as we make decisions and choices for the future in our personal lives but also as a school community as we plan for 2023.

Bike Week 21 - 25 November

What is bike week?

It is a week during Term 4 which all students, Kinder to Year 6, learn to ride a bike safely, learn road rules, get outside for more physical activity, and even learn about bike maintenance. We engage Chris MacGregor 'The Bike Man', to teach and assess skills needed to be responsible road users on a bike.

All students are expected to bring their bikes to school, and a well-fitting helmet, by Monday morning. They stay at school for the duration of the week and can be picked up again by Friday afternoon.

Once teachers are satisfied with the level of commitment to safety from each student they may take groups on rides around the local Margate community or even further, depending on ability. It all culminates in a “big ride” on the last day celebrating the increased level of confidence, ability, perseverance and stamina of all students.

Parent help is welcomed to provide the extra support to ensure risks are minimalised. Contact your class teacher if you are able to help. Remember to pop by the office with your Working with Vulnerable Peoples card before assisting the teacher.

Huon Show - Oliebollen

We need your help!

After two years off due to COVID, the Huon Show is back up and running and Channel will be there again selling Oliebollen.

We are looking for volunteers to be rostered on for 1 hour shifts on Saturday 12 November. If you are willing to help out between 9.00am - 3.00pm please contact the school office on 6267 2775 or admin@channel.tas.edu.au to advise a time slot that suits you best.

Huon and Channel Athletics Carnival

As our carnival is being held after the scheduled Huon and Channel Carnival on Wednesday 9 November, Mr Headley will be running some events for the Year 3 - 6 students to select the Channel Team.
A Consent2go will be sent to the parents of the selected students.

Athletics Carnival

Due to the current wet and soggy condition of our oval, and the rain forecast for the next few weeks, we have had to postpone this event to Tuesday 29 November.

Canberra Trip Year 5/6

At the end of Term 3, Year 5 and 6 students headed to Canberra on an experience of a lifetime. We spent five full days exploring Canberra where we went to places like The Australian War Memorial, Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery of Australia and the Royal Australian Mint, just to name a few. Our Channel students were incredible; they were respectful, they engaged in all the activities with a positive attitude and were kind to one another. We were extremely proud of the way they handled themselves even when tired and exhausted. A big thank you to the staff and parents who made this experience come to life and for keeping our precious students safe. We are grateful for such an amazing experience. Below are some of the highlights the students had whilst away.

Questacon by Zara

The calming, cool, crisp air flows through the wide doors as the swarm of children enter the large building. Colour floods my eyes and I’m mesmerized by what I’m seeing. I had never seen anything like it before.

The bright, joyful guides greet us with warm smiles and guide us to the gift shop. The cramped gift shop quickly becomes loud and crowded, it’s like a maze. I pick out what I want and pay for it as quickly as possible so I don’t have to listen to everyone talking all at once.

A quick walk down a windy hallway leads us to what looks like outer space. From where we sit in the middle of the room I can see every inch of the moon. I think about cheese when I gaze at the giant moon because of the craters covering it’s surface. The information about astronauts catches my eye as I wander around the room.

Before I know it, another windy hallway leads us to the steepest slide I’ve ever seen. My heart beats a 100 miles an hour as I watch my classmates and teachers tackle the terrifying free fall. I summon the courage to walk the stairs to the top of the slide in my orange suit. At the top I peer over the edge and feel the pressure from the guide to take the plunge. My courage disappears and my friend and I slowly return to the bottom.

The rest of the night passes quickly in a blur of colour and hands on experiences that I’ll never forget. I hope to visit this magnificent place again one day.

My Time in Canberra by Ryan

Slide

3…2…1…Go! The first person lets go of the beam, and down they fall. Only 4 more people until me. Sunny, cool and fun, these are only 0.001% of the words to describe Canberra. Camp at Canberra was the best camp I've ever been on.

From the bottom of the big slide at Questacon it looked as if it was 2.5 meters tall but at the top it looked like it’s 2.5 miles tall. It didn't look scary and dangerous; it looked terrifying and blood curdling!!! (I may be over exaggerating). While I was hanging off the bar I thought I was crazy but when my brain told my body to get off, it rebelled (bad body). I was terrified; 3…2…1…Go! My body let go (against my brain's will). It felt like I was safe with my back touching the slide as I fell, until I went into free fall. My back had let go of the slide and I then slid safely to a stop. I was overjoyed that I did it.

Sharp turn left. Sharp turn right. Faster and faster I go (well the character goes).

I walk into the AIS’ (Australian Institute of Sport) sportec (which is a bit like an arcade but for sport) area. I'm gobsmacked at how much work was put into the games. After a little look, I saw the skeleton simulator. I went straight over and got on the skeleton. Down the hill I flew, turning the corners, for just a moment. I thought I could feel the cold and bite of the deathly frostbite wind, hear the sound of sledge on ice, the taste of the ice flicking up off the ground, the smell of victory and feel the feeling of triumph. Then I failed a turn, I was back in the AIS. I lasted 32 seconds and I reached 104km’s an hour.

And that’s why Canberra is the best place to go on camp.

The National Gallery of Australia by Mila

Squish, splat, bam! Footsteps to freedom. A man and woman finding each other in the wilderness of an unknown tribe. This painting tells us how people from different tribes can make a difference in the world of love. Our class was invited to the National Gallery of Australia where we got to have a look at a few Aboriginal paintings and sculptures. But this is not a normal painting.

The large room was hollow and the ceilings were high. It was filled with lots of bright paintings, interesting photos and weird sculptures to admire. I made it a quest to see how many art styles I could find in the gallery. Let's just say there were a lot! All the different paintings made me feel inspired and made me want to pick up a pencil and start drawing a new masterpiece of my own.

My favourite painting we looked at had two main art styles mixed together. Modern and more abstract. It was good to see artists working together to tell their story. As we looked at the painting and brainstormed ideas of what the storyline might have been we saw a set of footprints walking along the painting. The footprints walked alone. Suddenly there were a ton then the two sets of footprints walked off in the distance. The tour guide told us that the two sets of footprints belong to a man and woman from different tribes finding each other then spending forever with each other. The two artists decided to then make a painting to tell their story.

So why is this not just a normal painting? Because this painting tells a story. A story that has changed many lives. A story that told us where the artists have been and how they grew.
