Year 5/6 English – Exploring the Battle Between Good and Evil

This term in English, our Year 5/6 class has been diving deep into C.S. Lewis’s novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Through reading, discussions, and analysis, students explored the powerful theme of good versus evil, looking closely at how Lewis used setting, characters, and the relationship between the protagonist and antagonist to develop this idea.

Students then wrote their own expository essays, explaining how the novel brings this theme to life. They learned to organise their ideas into clear paragraphs, support their thinking with evidence from the text, and use literary devices to deepen their explanations.

We are proud to share two thoughtful examples from our class—each excerpt is a single paragraph taken from a student’s essay, highlighting their insight and understanding of the theme. 

Matilda – Setting Paragraph

“In the land of Narnia, the setting changes from winter to spring. This change is a symbol of good triumphing over evil. Winter in Narnia represents the Witch’s power—cold, dark and never-ending. Spring comes with Aslan’s arrival, and it represents new life, warmth and hope. When the snow melts and the flowers begin to bloom, it shows that the Witch’s power is weakening. C.S. Lewis uses the seasons to show that good (Aslan) is stronger than evil (the Witch), and even though it seems like evil is in control for a time, good will always break through.”

Abby – Supporting Characters Paragraph

“C.S. Lewis uses supporting characters to show the theme of good versus evil. One good character is Father Christmas. He gives Peter, Susan and Lucy special gifts that help them in the battle against evil. Peter receives a sword, which shows bravery and leadership. Susan gets a horn and a bow and arrow to protect herself, and Lucy receives a healing potion to help others. These gifts prepare them to fight in the battle of good and evil. On the other hand, Maugrim the wolf is a servant of the Witch and tries to hunt the Pevensie children. He represents evil and fear. These characters help show that good is protective, healing and brave, while evil is cruel and violent.”

This writing task has not only helped students grow as analytical writers, but also encouraged them to reflect deeply on Christian themes of hope, sacrifice, and the triumph of good over evil.

Child and Youth Safe Standards

Half-Price Public Transport Fares Have Been Extended

Fares remain half price until 30 June 2026. The period beyond 31 December 2025 (1 January 2026 – 30 June 2026) will be subject to the future State Budget.
Half-price fares apply to:

• all fare types – adult, concession, child/student, urban and non-urban.

• all services listed on the Transport website timetables page.

• all government-contracted school bus services.

Bus Safety Incursion

This week our students took part in a special Bus Safety Incursion, where they learnt important lessons about how to travel safely on the bus.

The session was both interactive and practical, giving students the chance to talk through real-life scenarios and practise the right way to behave around buses. They learnt about:

• Safe waiting areas at the bus stop

• How to board and exit the bus safely

• The importance of staying seated and using seatbelts

• Respecting the bus driver and fellow passengers

• What to do in an emergency

The program was engaging and age-appropriate, with plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions and reflect on their own experiences.

These important reminders help our students feel confident and prepared when using bus transport to and from school or in the wider community.
